Nigeria's e-invoicing mandate could make businesses more bankable, not just compliant, according to Lucky Johnson, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pronalytics, a System Integrator accredited by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
Johnson says an invoice validated on the NRS Merchant Buyer
Solution (MBS) platform is becoming a business asset: proof that a transaction
happened, which companies can use to raise finance, demonstrate their track
record and prepare for audit.
"Let's assume we wake up tomorrow, and every
transaction from your business suddenly becomes visible, validated, verifiable
and trusted. What would you do differently as a business?" Johnson said.
His answer is that businesses would approach their banks,
investors and customers from a position of strength. A company with a clean,
validated invoice history could ask its bank to increase an overdraft, or seek
finance against invoices it is still waiting to be paid on.
"The benefit of being trusted as a business surpasses
the investment which is being put into whatever it takes to get compliance
today," Johnson said.
The argument rests on how the system works. Every invoice
validated through the MBS platform receives a unique Invoice Reference Number
(IRN), giving it an identity that third parties can check. A bank reviewing a
funding request no longer has to rely only on a PDF and the borrower's word.
The IRN also matters to customers. An invoice without one
cannot support an input VAT claim, so buyers have a direct reason to favour
suppliers whose invoices are validated.
Johnson says the gains reach inside the business too. With
invoices captured and validated in real time, finance teams can see their cash
position within minutes and be ready for audit within weeks rather than months.
"Beyond compliance, we get the intelligence," he
said. "You can make better strategic decisions, reach new markets. You are
able to see which of the branches is making money and which of them are just
busy."
Johnson acknowledges that compliance can look like a cost at
the start, particularly for businesses without modern accounting systems or
real-time invoicing. Every compliance shift, in any country, can feel that way
on day one, he said, but the value appears once the data is in place.
That is where an accredited System Integrator comes in. A
validated invoice is only as useful as the data behind it, and Pronalytics'
role is to connect a company's existing accounting or ERP system to the NRS
platform so that every invoice is converted, validated, and returned to the
company's own records.
Pronalytics delivers this through TaxAnchor360, its platform
for NRS e-invoicing, tax intelligence, and Central Bank of Nigeria compliance.
The company designs it around what it calls continuous compliance, treating tax
obligations as ongoing operations rather than periodic filing exercises.
Johnson argues that this continuous flow of trusted data is
what turns compliance into an advantage. Businesses that own their data, keep
it clean and use the intelligence it produces, he says, will be better placed
to compete, both in Nigeria and in the wider African market.
For many businesses, the first step is getting compliant on
time. Medium taxpayers, with annual turnover between N1 billion and N5 billion,
went live on the MBS platform on 1 July 2026 and face compliance enforcement
from January to March 2027, according to the NRS implementation timeline.
Under Section 104 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act,
failing to process a taxable invoice through the MBS platform carries a penalty
of N200,000 per invoice, plus 100 per cent of the VAT due and interest.
Large taxpayers, with turnover above N5 billion, have been
subject to enforcement since their 31 July 2026 deadline passed. Emerging
taxpayers, below N1 billion, are scheduled to go live in July 2027.
The mandate is part of Nigeria's wider effort to modernise
tax administration. The MBS platform enables real-time capture of
business-to-business and business-to-government transactions, with the stated
aims of improving transparency, standardising invoicing and reducing revenue
leakage.
System Integrator accreditation requires approval from the
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), which reviews
applicants on technical, data-protection and governance standards, working with
the NRS under Nigeria's national e-invoicing guideline.
