Prominent Nigerian human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Yele Sowore, has called for stronger investment in youth development through education and sports as he attended the 2026 Interhouse Sports of HOMAJ Schools in Ondo State.

Sowore, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, presented medals and trophies to winning students and commended the school’s commitment to raising confident, disciplined, and socially responsible young people.


The event brought together pupils and students from the nursery, primary, and secondary sections of the school in a colourful celebration of athleticism, culture, and unity.

Competition was keen among the four houses—Blue (Mr. Adeyanju), Green (Chief Mr. and Mrs. Akinsemolu), White (Mr. Omowole), and Purple (Madam Alice Ashanu and Prof. Duyile)—with Green House emerging overall winner after outstanding performances across multiple events.

A major highlight of the day was the cultural march past, which drew admiration from guests and parents. Each house showcased Nigeria’s cultural diversity: Green House presented an Edo-themed display featuring a king, queen, and a panda mascot; Purple House highlighted Igbo heritage; White House celebrated Yoruba traditions; while Blue House represented Hausa culture.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Schools, Dr. Akinsemolu, emphasised the importance of resilience and self-discovery in shaping future leaders.

“Sports teach more than competition,” she said. “They teach discipline, courage, and the ability to keep going. Every student here is learning to run their race and discover their strength.”

Also speaking, the Minister for Sports of the HOMAJ Student Representative Council, Miss Omojadesola Adesuyan, noted that the event strengthened unity and leadership among students.

“This experience reminds us that true strength lies in perseverance and teamwork,” she said. “Whether we win or not, we grow stronger by showing up and giving our best.”

The 2026 Interhouse Sports further reflects HOMAJ Schools’ enduring legacy of excellence. Founded in 1982 with just five students, the institution has grown into a respected centre of learning with thousands of alumni, continuing to shape future leaders through a blend of academic, physical, and moral development.
